"You can make anything by writing." –C.S. Lewis

Not only can you make anything by writing, you can learn anything by reading. If I haven’t written it yet, I’ll read about it and learn how. My goal is to create clear, concise, and accurate copy for all types of audiences, no matter the medium. I specialize in writing for children, instructional content, academic writing, activity development, catchy marketing copy, and puns.

Hand Bone Model

INSTRUCTION GUIDES

I write instructional copy for children’s science kits (ages 9+) at the award-winning children’s company, Little Passports. I strive to create clear, concise, and age-appropriate instructions to guide children through their science experiments with minimal adult help. It should be fun, not frustrating! In addition, I concept and art direct accompanying illustrations.

Laurel Wreath Kit

PACKAGING COLLATERAL

Little Passports subscriptions offer a country-related or theme-related souvenir in the packages that tie back to the characters’ stories. Depending on the souvenir, we design the packaging and add informative copy either to showcase how to use the souvenir or highlight the cultural relevance, such as a laurel wreath kit for our Greece package. I’ve written copy for a few of the souvenirs.

THE COMMENT

Along with ten other of my Boston University’s College of Communication compatriots, we spent a semester creating and compiling original essays for our graduate student magazine, The Comment. To learn more about our writing process, visit our blog. Many thanks to our editor Shraddha Chakradhar and faculty editor Professor Phyllis Waldman. Blog Posts

BLOG POSTS

I’ve gathered what you might say is a hodgepodge of blog posts. Published on Little Passports.com and Blurban.org, I take on a variety of different topics. Unfortunately, Blurban is no longer an active site, so please bear with my manuscripts.

Tuk Tuk

CHARACTER-BASED PRODUCT COPY

Over the years at Little Passports, I’ve had the joy of writing in the voice of cartoon characters. Characters Max, Mia & Toby (pictured here) and Sofia and Sam travel the world while sharing their global experiences via letters and postcards. It’s part of my job to bring these experiences to life for our subscribers in a fun, easy-to-understand manner.

Landing Page

WEB + EMAIL COPY

Little Passports primarily aims to keep kids “unplugged.” However, we do provide additional content and activities online for them to learn more about a theme or country. I’ve written copy for the landing pages that accompany the science kits as well built landing pages in WordPress. Content includes a how-to video, fun facts, and helpful experiment hints. To create awareness, I also write email copy directing our subscribers to learn more about their science kits.

EXPOSÉ ON SELF-PUBLISHING

As part of my graduate coursework at Boston University, I completed a professional project regarding a media/communication trend. My project delves into the DIY industry of self-publishing as it evaluates the process and value compared to more traditional forms of publishing. While the graphics do date themselves, I hope you can appreciate that pulled this off in Microsoft Word.

Press Release

PRESS RELEASES

To complete my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, I took several courses in writing for media. Take a look at my sample press releases for two very different products.

Vietnam Activity

ACTIVITY DEVELOPMENT

Culturally-inspired activities make up a big part of the different subscriptions at Little Passports. I’ve had the opportunity to develop activity content across three subscription lines, spanning three age groups (ages 3-5, 6-10, and 9+). Activities include crafts, recipes, word-based puzzles, mazes, science experiments, and more.

Butterfly Game

ONLINE GAME INSTRUCTIONS

While no longer an active component of the subscription, in the past, I’ve art directed and written expository and instructional copy for several of our country-inspired HTML games.

HEYPITTSBURGH.COM

I wrote a weekly article about things to do in Pittsburgh. For those of you who have never been, yes, there is a fair amount to do in this steel city. And, yes, a lot of the times they involve sports and sandwiches (or salads) with french fries in them. Unfortunately, heypittsburgh.com is no longer an active site. (R.I.P. @heypittsburgh) Though, you can still click the button to read my article manuscripts and get a taste of Pittsburgh livin’.

Leveson Inquiry

CITIZEN JOURNALISM IN THE UK

During my graduate work in London, I composed an almost op-ed-like piece about the impact of citizen journalism in the context of the Leveson Inquiry. The Leveson Inquiry is a public inquiry into “culture, practices and ethics” of the British press after a phone hacking scandal concerning the former News of the World, a Murdoch publication. My essay delves into the value and disadvantages of citizen journalism. In addition, it assesses the direction of this amateur field through key arguments of the Leveson Inquiry.
